Croatia Our school

Jurja Šižgorića is a public elementary school, situated in a small town of Šibenik, Croatia, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. In our school there are 440 pupils, ages 7 to 15. There are mixed ability students, ranging from gifted ones to those with special needs, social issues or behaviour problems. We are working on the integration of pupils with bigger disabilities in regular classes and there is also a special class which they attend. Apart from regular classes, our students can choose from 3 optional subjects (ICT, Italian, Religion) and many different extra curricular groups and workshops. Our team of experts consists of a psychologist, psychotherapist and special education teachers, and they have been very successful in working on programs such as: early detection of specific difficulties in writing and reading, Abuse and Violence Prevention. The teachers in our school have a passion for implementing creative ideas and new ways of teaching into everyday work, since we feel that the right methodology and the diversity of teaching approaches are crucial for our students. We have experience of working on different eTwinning projects, a Comenius project and an Erasmus+ project. We have been active participants in international projects regarding media literacy and we have a tradition of a strong film-group which has won numerous local, state and international film awards. Šibenik used to be an important industrial town, but post-war effects from the 90s, are unfortunately still felt on social standard of its people. Many families are of low income, and the situation with education in our country is not at its best times, there are little opportunities for students and teachers within their curricula, which is why we are doing our best to include our students into an atmosphere of new, life-changing experiences in a European dimension. The experience from our past projects has taught us how crucial these projects can be for students in changing their perspective about the world, working on their tolerance and improving their skills and abilities. Projects are also to give our special needs students and those with fewer opportunities a chance to be actively
